The »New Real« includes this as well: Demographic change is transforming everything – how we work, how we live, and how we function as a society – making it one of the greatest challenges of our time. It’s high time to take a closer look and ask the critical questions: What decisions must we make today to ensure that working environments, living spaces, and social structures remain sustainable across generations? And what responsibility do design, architecture, and regional planning bear in this?
Why is this so important right now?
- Scientists predict that living to 100 may soon become reality.
- The WHO projects that by 2050 the number of people over 60 worldwide will rise to 2 billion – twice as many as today.
- In Austria, according to Statistics Austria, almost one in three people will be over 65 by the same year.
- At the same time, around 1.3 million baby boomers in Austria will retire in the coming years.
The fact is: our society is ageing – and that changes everything. The boundaries between working life and retirement are shifting. Companies need to fill vacancies and preserve knowledge. At the same time, mobility and living spaces must be designed to suit all generations – and products, services, and communication must be developed to enable participation and connection across generational lines.
Old structures and ways of thinking no longer fit – it’s time to question them and develop new, creative solutions.
What happens at the Age Forward Lab?
At the Age Forward Lab, we question existing patterns, spark new impulses for design, architecture, and regional development, and discuss new perspectives for an ageing society.
Three milestones mark the path of our expedition:
Milestone 1: Designing workplaces for all generations
How can we design work environments that enable knowledge transfer, creativity, and genuine interaction across generations – and where age-diverse teams and innovative learning cultures can thrive?
Milestone 2: Rethinking living spaces for intergenerational coexistence
How can we design living concepts and public spaces that promote self-determination, truly bring generations together, and make social participation accessible to all?
Milestone 3: Creating products, services, and communication that connect generations
How can we develop products, services, and communication that build bridges between generations and challenge outdated notions of ageing with bold, stereotype-free thinking?
What can you expect?
A day full of insights and lively discussions that opens up new perspectives, makes connections visible, and sparks creative approaches for a future that connects generations.
