Architectural photography is often seen as a means of presenting buildings in a flawless light – smooth, immaculate, almost indistinguishable from visualisations or AI-generated imagery. This workshop offers a different perspective: architectural photography that reveals the soul of a place.

Between Composition, Atmosphere and Narrative

At its core, the workshop explores how architecture can be portrayed photographically as a living space – with all its traces, stories and potential. In a time when existing buildings are increasingly coming into focus, this documentary and sensitive approach is more relevant than ever.

Participants will gain insight into the theoretical and practical foundations of architectural photography, as well as topics such as image composition, atmosphere and photographic storytelling. In a hands-on field exercise, they will approach an existing building together – with the aim of capturing its character in a series of images.

The workshop is led by Emilian Hinteregger – photographer, lecturer and researcher at TU Graz. It is aimed at those interested in architecture and photography who wish to explore architecture through the lens of a camera.
