How can vacant spaces be used creatively and sustainably? An exhibition and open programme at the Hornig Areal show how new ideas can emerge for unused spaces.

What happens when buildings stand empty? What impact does this have on the urban environment – and what opportunities does it create? The interactive exhibition by »ÖKOPROFIT«, the project team of the »Sustainability Challenge«, and the accompanying programme at the Hornig Areal explore these questions and show how stillness can give rise to new perspectives.

»ÖKOPROFIT« is an environmental management programme by the City of Graz that helps businesses reduce costs through the implementation of environmental and climate protection measures while benefiting from sustainable practices. »ÖKOPROFIT« stands for purposeful, future-oriented, and sustainable business operations.

The »Sustainability Challenge« is a two-semester course offered jointly by seven Austrian universities in Vienna, Graz, and Leoben, in which students work in teams with project partners such as »ÖKOPROFIT« to implement exciting sustainability-related projects.

Impulses for sustainable reuse

From 14 to 17 May 2025, the »Re:space« events will take place at the Festival Centre. Whether it’s vacancy yoga, a poetry slam, or networking – the programme offers a hands-on experience of how vacant commercial spaces can be used creatively and collectively. The exhibition showcases best-practice examples from Graz of successful interim use and rescued buildings that have been given a second chance.

Shaping the city together

The exhibition is aimed at everyone who wants to play an active role in shaping urban space – with ideas for sustainable use, community action, and architectural rethinking. Children are also welcome to take part: colouring sheets and paints will be available to help bring their ideas to life.
