The spatial installation developed by the MO:YA design collective explores the possibilities of freely available AI models at the intersection of media art and design. Visitors interact with an advanced generative AI instance and generate multimedia content in the process. In this process, complex digital keys are constantly being generated, resulting in unique audiovisual compositions. At the same time, insights are provided into the real and virtual inner workings of the machine.
Democratization of generative AI
Many people interact with generative AI systems within virtual chat rooms. In these rooms, instructions are sent to “the cloud”, which returns an algorithmically generated image after a short wait. People tend to assign magical attributes to such advanced technology and its developers – keyword: “tech wizards”. However, this view favors the spread of technocratic tendencies and increases dependence on technology companies.
At the same time, the democratization of artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining momentum. It is largely supported by open source developments such as Latent Consistency Models – an AI method published at the end of 2023. This enables greatly accelerated calculations using low-cost electronic components and enables designers to independently generate visualizations of remarkably high optical quality.
